Oh So Lean is a Northern Ireland based company who produce a range of healthier and free from (including gluten free) meat based foods.
I recently met Connor Morgan, one of the founders of ‘Oh So Lean’ whilst at a gluten free food show in Belfast. He kindly gave me some of his products and asked that I review review one of them – Pork, Chilli, & Garlic Sausages.
As a registered dietitian, I abide by a professional code of conduct for dietitians. This means ensuring that only evidenced based advice is provided. A food review based on my own opinion is not evidence based and so will not be part of this review.
Instead, what you will see is only facts, including a comparison to similar products on the high street.
ABOUT OH SO LEAN
Oh So Lean was originally formed due to Connor Morgan wanting to lose weight but having difficulty finding appropriate meat products. Luckily, Sean Morgan, was able to make these products and before long word and demand had spread.
Oh So Lean have now branched out to produce not only low salt and low fat products but also Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Soya Free and Msg Free products.
In the table below, I have randomly selected 3 other gluten free sausages to compare the ‘Oh So Lean’ sausages for price, salt and fat content. After all, just because you are gluten free, does not mean that healthy eating goes out of the window.
Looking at the figures, shows that Oh So Lean is definitely the healthiest gluten free sausage, however, it is also the most expensive. Perhaps, this is due to it being quite a unique product which allows it to be in the market at that slightly higher price point.

GLUTEN FREE SAUSAGE CASSEROLE
- 8 ‘Oh So Lean’ chilli & garlic gluten free Sausages
- 1 onion cut into strips
- 400g tinned tomatoes
- 400g tinned butter beans
- 1 tablespoon of olive oil
- 6 rashers of ‘Oh So Lean’ dry cured low salt bacon
- 2 bay leaves
- 3 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce
- 1 stock cube made up with 100ml water
- 1 tablespoon of mixed herbs
1.Preheat the oven at 200ºC
2.Fry the onions until soft (not crispy)
3.Set the onions to one side and fry the sausages until they have a slight browning their outside. Then put the sausages into a casserole dish.
4.Fry the bacon using the same oil, this time until cooked (2-3 minutes). When the bacon is cooked, add it on top of the sausages in the casserole bowl.
- Add the rest of the ingredients over the sausages and bacon, do not worry about mixing them all together.
- Put into the oven to cook for around 30 – 40 minutes. Then Serve.
